Where and How You Can Donate Clothes This Summer

Charities that will pick up donations

Since summer is here, winter clothes may be the furthest thing from your mind, but did you know that now is an excellent time to make charitable donations — especially clothing donations — to organizations that help military families? While it’s common for most military charities to receive a large portion of their yearly donations during the winter holiday season, now is the perfect time for helping families in need by donating your gently used clothing and home goods.

You’re probably asking yourself, “But where can I donate clothes?”. Before you type “where can I donate clothes” into your search engine of choice, consider reaching out to local charities or non-profit organizations in your area. There are a number of national, regional, and local organizations that accept clothing donations and will even pick them up directly from your home for added convenience!

Similarly, it’s common for many of these organizations to hold clothing drives throughout the year. At these events, donors are encouraged to drop off their used clothing as well as network with donors and volunteers. Clothing drives are an excellent way to draw the community together in support of troops, their families, and veterans as well.

Of course, you can always donate directly to a military family or families in need that you may know personally. Or, you can register with a local military charity to send an anonymous care package, which includes used clothing, to a military family in need. Some donors prefer to remain anonymous as to keep the focus on the helping others.

Donating or re-purposing clothing is not only a great way to support military families, but it’s also an effective way to reduce the accumulation of textile waste in area landfills. Did you know that up to 5% of the waste found in landfills is fabric or textile? Your donated clothing contributes to two different noteworthy causes at the same time!
