What Do Americans Look For In Apartments These Days?

Property management

There’s a lot to consider when you rent somewhere new.

Are there enough walking trails for you and your dog? How about a thriving downtown culture to give you something to do on the weekends you feel like going out? When you add that on top of pricing, the preferences of your significant other or the eventual arrival of a baby…it can seem like a right mess of a job. Thankfully, apartments for rent have never been more diverse and more interesting than they are today. There are more than enough options for you no matter which walk of life you come from, with competitive prices and wonderful amenities to ensure your environment is supporting you every step of the way.

Before you hunker down and commit to a decision, brush up on what the state of renting looks like today.

Did you know over 30% of renters move every year? There’s no reason to fret about your wanderlust, as plenty of people feel the pull of the open road time and time again. A Gallup survey revealed as many as one in four Americans will move every five years. These rates go up and down depending on both the season and the year, with summer being the most popular time to move by a landslide. People move for all sorts of reasons, ranging from business to a desperate need for a change of pace, and there are more than enough executive apartments to meet demand.

It’s thought the average American will move at least 12 times. No matter where you land on the scale, there’s an option out there with your name on it. It’s common for people to move for family reasons, whether it’s tying the knot with a significant other or expecting a baby and needing a place to raise their child. Another common reason people take to the open road is for business-related purposes or schooling. A recent study found up to 70% of apartment renters owning pets and one of the most coveted elements of any new place are walking trails.

Wait, walking trails? Yes, it turns out that a city that’s easy to move around in is one of the most sought after elements in a new move these days. When gas is expensive and schedules are tight, a little flexibility in going from point A to point B is everything! Also known as ‘walkability’, plenty of walking trails has been deemed appealing by both Millennials and Baby Boomers. Harvard’s Joint Center For Housing Studies recently released a report projecting an upwards of four million new renters during the next decade.

Executive apartments for rent boast plenty of accommodations to attract attention. This can range from a community hot tub to a gazebo grilling area with fire pit. Something almost everyone can agree on, though, is good, old-fashioned internet. A 2015 survey found a little over half of all respondents stating they actively tested for mobile connectivity during their apartment tour. While the vast majority at 95% stated good reception is very important, just over 65% said they actually have good coverage in their community. If this is a dealbreaker for you and yours, make sure to double-check when taking a tour of your apartment!

What other popular amenities might you seek out on your journey? An Apartment Guide survey saw nearly 60% of property managers stating pools and fitness centers are among the most requested resources at their place of business. For others it can just come down to cost. A renter respondents survey saw half of all current renters saying they preferred to live in an apartment over a house because of the lowered budget and lowered stress. Another 25% said they were renters by choice, not by budget, making this one of the easiest decisions you can imagine after you get a few details out of the way.

Walking trails are important if you’re a fitness guru in need of some space. A peaceful community is vital if you’re expecting a child and want to put up roots. Whatever apartment complex you choose, make sure this decision is the very definition of personal.
