Designing a nautical themed room isn’t quite as easy as it might sound. You can’t just slap some nautical home decorations on the walls and call it complete. You need to plan your colors, get appropriate patterns, and more.
That being said, it’s also not that hard. You just need to think things through a little. Here’s what you can do.
Repainting. If you want your home to be decked out in nautical decor, you’re going to need to get the color of the rooms right. Nautical themes use three main colors: navy, white, and khaki. Chances are you’re going to want to whitewash everything, and either add some patterns — like horizontal navy stripes — or leave them be.
Redecorating. Once you’ve got your walls the appropriate colors, you get to do the fun part — redecorating. Choose some nice, nautical items to hang on the walls, like anchors, ropes, bells, lights, or flags. Don’t overload your walls, though. Nautical themes are supposed to look elegant, and rustic. In order to achieve that, you’re going to need to keep things a little sparse, a little minimalistic. Just put some nautical decorations on the walls, and maybe one, large piece on the mantel to die it all together.
Re-coordinating. Unless you have a huge budget, chances are you’re not going to be able to get new furniture that goes along with your new nautical decor, which leaves you with two choices. You could either leave your furniture as is, potentially classing with your new nautical theme, or you could get some tasteful coverlets. If you decide to the latter — which you definitely should — you can stray a little bit from the primary colors of navy, khaki, and white. Many interior designers use red, black, and yellow as secondary colors when doing a nautical thing, which means that you can also choose those, as well.
