There are basically two purposes for a bedroom. On the one hand, a bedroom must be functional, since missing out on restful sleep can be damaging to both physical and mental health. But since a bedroom is such a personal room, it can be fun to express a little more personality, too. Here are some tips on how to choose bedroom furniture that go beyond picking out your average bedroom set:
- Relieve the Matchy-Matchy Pressure:
When using an eclectic design aesthetic, don’t feel as if everything you pick out needs to match. Rather, make it your goal to have everything coordinate. Mix some wooden furniture with similar stains (a bedframe and a dresser that are part of a set, perhaps) with painted furniture (such as a vanity and chair set that you’ve sanded and painted in an accent color). Don’t be afraid to mix metals when it comes to drawer pulls and handles. And try to pick a few pieces that look older than the rest of the furniture, to give the impression that you’ve collected and curated these pieces over time.
- Don’t Overspend on Soft Finishes:
While fabrics (curtains, duvet covers, pillows, etc.) can add much-needed patterns and colors into a room, resist the urge to spend too much of your budget on these elements. Choose the duvet set that’s only $80 instead of the one that’s $300; it’s likely that no one will be able to tell the difference, and that $220 is much better spent on high quality furniture that will last for years.
- Don’t Forget Function:
Don’t get so swept up in the decorating aspect of picking out bedroom furnishings that you forget the primary function of a bedroom: sleep. Invest in a mattress that is comfortable and supportive, actually going to a bedroom furniture store and lying on each prospective mattress for a minimum of 10 minutes before selecting one. While it’s true you’ll probably pay a little more for these mattresses than you would for a rolled one from a big-box store, there are plenty of affordable mattress sets that will help you get better sleep for years to come.
